NetherRealm Studios held their livestream reveal event for Mortal Kombat 11 today. In this livestream, NetherRealm premiered never before seen gameplay and gave fans a deep dive into the changes coming this time around with Mortal Kombat 11. Ed Boon, Co-Creator of the Mortal Kombat Series and Creative Director on Mortal Kombat 11 at NetherRealm Studios, took to the stage revealing that they would be showcasing seven fighters throughout the stream. From Classic to New and everything in-between, Mortal Kombat 11 is sure to deliver something for every type of Mortal Kombat fan.
In the livestream NetherRealm showed off Mortal Kombat 11‘s Story Prologue, giving players a better grasp on the story that will unfold over the course of the game. Things pick up right after the ending of Mortal Kombat X. Raiden is at Shang Tsun’s Island Ruins and is shown torturing/interrogating Shinnok. Raiden then says to Shinnok, “There are some fates worse than death”, decapitates him, and places his still alive head on a table. Raiden leaves, and here is where we get our first formal introduction to Mortal Kombat 11‘s new female antogonist, Kronika. Kronika enters the scene at which point the blood flow from Shinnok’s wound stops in place. NetherRealm has stated that she has the ability to control Time and will be able to bring back characters from the past and make them collide with existing versions of characters, causing all kinds of turmoil and timeline-altering repercussions.
In Mortal Kombat 11 NetherRealm has added a perfect blocking system. Much like other fighting games, it provides you with a way to bounce back from your opponents attacks giving you a better means of defense than just blocking regularly. If you execute a perfect block you will counter your opponent, leaving them open for an attack of your own.

In Mortal Kombat 11 players can customize their own version of each character. The full Roster has not yet been revealed, but on January 30 NetherRealm will be doing another livestream event where they will show off even more of the game, so if one of your favourite characters hasn’t been shown yet, there is still hope. Mortal Kombat 11‘s customization is even deeper than that of Injustice 2′s, including 3 categories of costume pieces for players to customize, different weapons to choose from, a multitude of colour palettes for your characters’ outfits, and as always, various Fatalities and Brutalities to unlock as players progress through the game.
Here are some examples of the gear/items players will be able to unlock and use for Scorpion. This should give you an idea of what to expect when it comes to character customization in Mortal Kombat 11.
The Kosmetics section will cover everything from Skins/Costumes to your Intro/Victory Cinematics, as well as your Fatalities, Brutalities, and End of Round Taunts.
Naturally, The Abilities section will cover all of your unlocked Abilities. Here is where you will go to change which ones you have equipped. Just like with Injustice 2, in Mortal Kombat 11 players will be able to create their own ideal version of each character, allowing you to test out which abilities you prefer for a particular character and playstyle. You can also create several presets which you can swap between.
NetherRealm didn’t explain this section in great detail, but the description says you can, “Distribute AI Attribute Points to determine how this Variation behaves as an AI Fighter.”.
Will you be pre-ordering Mortal Kombat 11 so you can unlock Shao Khan and access the Beta on March 28? Or are you waiting until the next livestream event on January 30 to see more of the game so you can make a decision? Let us know in the comment section below!
