The Evolution Championship Series returns in 2016 and organizers of the event have revealed the nine games that will be featured in the main competition. The list includes two new additions and one returning game. The lineup was revealed on Tuesday’s special announcement Twitch stream. Details as to why they were chosen were discussed by event co-founder Joey Cuellar.
Street Fighter V is replacing Street Fighter IV, which has been a part of the competition since 2009. Though many people anticipated the fifth installment of the legendary series to be included, few thought that it would replace the previous game entirely.
Pokkén Tournament, a new fighter based on Pokémon, is also being featured in the tournament. Bandai Namco’s new game is only featured in Japanese arcades at the moment, though it will be releasing in the west on Wii U sometime this year.
Both Super Smash Bros. Wii U and Super Smash Bros. Melee are featured in the competition. This is the third return for the Wii U installment of the franchise. Melee, which has been featured many times before, was brought back into the tournament by popular demands of fans who claim it is the ideal version fit for competitive play.
Mortal Kombat X makes a return as well as Xbox One exclusive Killer Instinct.
The full line-up is as follows:
- Street Fighter V
- Super Smash Bros. Melee
- Super Smash Bros. Wii U
- Guilty Gear Xrd Revelator
- Mortal Kombat X
- Pokkén Tournament
- Killer Instinct
- Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3
- Tekken 7: Fated Retribution
EVO 2016 will be held on July 15th -17th at the Las Vegas Convention Center. The Sunday Finals will be held at the Mandalay Bay Sports Arena.
