In an unexpected turn, Sony has revealed plans to enable PS2 emulation on PS4 hardware. Although no concrete plans are currently known, a Sony representative stated in an email to Wired that they “…are working on utilizing PS2 emulation technology to bring PS2 games forward to the current generation.”
Though there is very little information to go off, this is a promising development for the console. The PS4 is the first Sony system to release without any form of backwards compatibility. The sheer popularity and breadth of titles on the PS2 marks it as fertile ground for compatibility, and will stand to significantly bolster the PS4 library.
The first title to utilize emulation has already been released, with the Star Wars: Battlefront console bundle. The release was packaged with a selection of classic Star Wars games, including Super Star Wars and Star Wars: Jedi Starfighter, among others. No specific details are known regarding the functionality of the emulation, nor is there any timeframe given for release.
