Afterglow AG 9 Wireless Headset Review (Xbox One)

Performance Designed Products is renowned for their high-quality third-party accessories, and their headsets are a huge part of that equation. PDP has come out with a new version of their AG line of Afterglow headsets, the AG 9. There are versions for both the Xbox One and the PS4, but we were fortunate enough to receive a copy of the Afterglow AG 9 for the Xbox One for review purposes, and it does not disappoint.

Right out of the box, you’ll find the AG 9 Wireless Headset, a removable noise-cancelling microphone, a USB transmitter for your Xbox One console, a six foot inch play-and-charge cable, and a 3.5 MM audio cable. The design of the headset is actually really impressive and incredibly visually appealing. “Afterglow” is a killer marketing tool and gives the headset and other items in the Afterglow line (like the Afterglow Prismatic Controller we reviewed) spunk that so many other third-party accessories lack, especially in terms of branding. PDP definitely knows what they are doing and are masters of this. In order to start up the headset, you plug in the USB transmitter into your Xbox One console and hold down the button on the left side of the headset. This connects the headset to your Xbox One. If you press the button again lightly, it mutes your mic. The microphone is both noise-cancelling and detachable, making it perfect for voice chat or even simply using it to listen to game audio. When you turn the headset on, it glows green, which jibes perfectly with both PDP’s Afterglow marketing and Microsoft’s marketing with the Xbox One; it’s genius.

The headset gets up to 16 hours of battery life (it charges via a USB plugin) and can connect to your console from up to 40 feet away. There is also a “mode” button, which denotes what audio mode you would like to play in. There is either Bass Boost or Pure Audio. Bass Boost  is for players who want more bombastic explosions and a higher bass line, and it does not sacrifice audio quality to achieve this. Pure Audio takes a more balanced approach, giving the player the ability to hear the game as it was “intended” by developers. Both options are great and give players choice, which is so important. You can also adjust both chat volume and the master game volume by way of two audio dials which are conveniently located on the side of the headset.

The unit also comes with a 3.5 MM audio jack, which allows the headset to plug in to both mobile devices and computers, and even allows you to voice chat through the cable. This is incredibly convent and gives the product even more value than it already has. The audio is crystal clear through the audio jack on my iPhone and it works fantastic for Skype calls. For a 2.0 stereo headset, the audio is surprisingly crisp. Your voice sounds crystal clear as well and I simply continue to be amazed at how much better this sounds than my 7.1 surround sound Playstation Gold headset, to the point where I would even recommend the Afterglow AG 9 Wireless Headset for the Playstation 4 to any and everybody. The headset is also so comfortable. There are some headsets I have used that have kind of burned the edges of my ears; this is not one of them. It is properly cushioned for excellent comfortability, both around the ears and inside the top of the headset, which makes it not only comfortable but also incredibly durable, which makes this product golden.

I have to reveal for the sake of transparency that the first version of this headset that I received from PDP was defective; it wouldn’t produce voice chat on my Xbox One. Thankfully this was remedied with my replacement, and PDP was very quick to both provide excellent service and replace my defective copy. It was probably only a one-in-a-million chance, as there have not been widespread reports of problems with the Afterglow AG 9. All in all, this headset is top notch, and although $99.99 may seem steep for a headset, it is of the utmost quality and definitely worth it. PDP puts out some of the best third-party accessories and Microsoft themselves have licensed the product. From the really cool look of the headset to all of the various functionalities it possesses, PDP has hit it out of the park with this one.

Thank you to Performance Designed Products for providing a copy of their product for our Afterglow AG 9 Wireless Headset Review.
