Anime Expo 2016 Highlights New Details for Ace Attorney: Spirit of Justice (Coverage)

Gamer Professionals was on-site this year at the Anime Expo 2016, and got some insight into the new Ace Attorney title, Spirit of Justice. Producer Motohide Eshiro and Localization Director Janet Hsu were in attendance, and provided information about the many characters and some story information.

The event kicked off with a new trailer which heavily featured the reunion between Phoenix Wright’s old assistant, Maya Fey, now the Master of the Kurain Channeling Technique. The trailer ended with the news that Ace Attorney: Spirit of Justice would release in September 2016 for the Nintendo 3DS.

The next step in the visual novel series has two main protagonists instead of one, with Phoenix Wright traveling to clear clients in the fictional Kingdom of Khu’rain, a land based on the Far East with monks in its streets. A Khu’rain religion exists that deals with the ever-present spiritual world. According to Eshiro, some of the early designs of this kingdom were based on ancient cities, cities that had far too similar resemblances to locations that may have appeared in titles such as Tomb Raider or Uncharted.

On the other hand, Apollo Justice remains in the United States (eat your hamburgers, Apollo) to helm the Wright Anything Agency alongside returning attorney and junior partner Athena Cykes, who made her return in Dual Destinies.

The court system in the Kingdom of Khu’rain was one based on Divination Seances, where the Divine Priestess Rayfa would procure insights into the victim’s last moments, which would appear in a Divination Pool. This pool is the major facet that makes the decisions/verdicts. The courtroom, located in the Temple Temple (and no, it’s not a typo!), does not have lawyers present, as the Kingdom has a serious hatred towards attorneys for reasons yet to be discovered.

The more interesting portions of the conference delved into early concepts. The early concepts discussed were the Divination Seances, which were originally supposed to be the soul of the victim possessing a doll or the crime scene being divined in smoke clouds. These were only eliminated due to directional implementation or technological limits. Characters, new and recurring, were presented with concept art as well, with characters such as Phoenix and Apollo being given more hardened appearances, similar to impressions of going to war.

The panel moved into introducing and re-introducing old characters, with the more humorous moments surrounding Gaspen Payne becoming the Chief Prosecutor of the Kingdom of Khu’rain, decked in gold and riches having been chased out of the United States. The other character who received a lot of laughter was the tour guide, Ahlbi Ur’gaid. Read that a few times, and you’ll see why. He’s a tour guide, for reference. On the other hand, we saw more insight into the rival prosecutor Nahyuta Sahdmadhi. I’m still wondering alongside the development team just how his scarf manages to flow like that.

Anywho, the game is coming up really shortly, and is sure to be a great adventure. We’ll keep you posted here at Gamer Professionals of any new developments, stay tuned.
