Nostalgia inducing games and consoles are common in our present day gaming industry. Nintendo brought back NES and the SNES with the Classic Editions late last year and this year. Atari consoles existed before the NES and the SNES but have not been able to keep themselves afloat in the modern age of gaming like Nintendo has. The Ataribox is a modern version of the Atari 2600 from the 1970s.
While there is no official release date, it is expected to arrive early 2018. Ataribox will be available for pre-order starting December 14th. This console is going for about $250 to $300 which seems a bit high seeing as present day consoles are going for the same price. Since 2004, Atari has released multiple Atari Flashback consoles and they are not as pricey as the new Atari console.
The Ataribox will be Linux based, and will come preloaded with classic Atari games and certain PC games. The console looks sleek and visually cannot be compared to the Flashback series. The Ataribox has two versions: one with wood on the front of the black console, similar to the Atari 2600, the other is red and black. Ataribox is meant to be thought of as a new console, because not only will you receive a library of retro games, the console will also be able to play new Indie games and as well as have streaming functions.
Atari‘s crowdfunding program is expected to start soon.
