Last week Bandai Namco teased a new game with a beautifully hand-drawn trailer using the tagline “Prepare to Dine”; a not-so-subtle nod to the Dark Souls franchise. Over the last few days we’ve been treated to a slew of screenshots and details from the new project titled Code Vein, scheduled for release in 2018. Vague – just how we like it.
According to the English press release, Code Vein will be an action-RPG set on Earth in the not-too-distant future. Some disaster has brought the planet to the brink of collapse, and the towering skyscrapers of Earth’s past prosperity lay like broken shells across the landscape. I’m sure this is sounding familiar…oh wait – among the ruins of the old world, there is a hidden society of blood-sucking superhuman amnesiac vampires known as Revenants. You will play as one of these Revenant, and, along with others, seek to uncover lost memories and put an end to whatever horror is plaguing the lands.
As a Revenant, you will be able to collect the souls of…I mean, the blood of fallen enemies to enhance your abilities and weapons. A piece of equipment unique to the Revenant is the “Blood Veil”. This equipment usually takes the form of clothing, and is modified upon drinking blood via a pipe that goes through the equipment into the user’s mouth. One type of Blood Veil forms claw-like gauntlets on the right arm that can suck up blood in close combat. At least we know the Revenant will be well hydrated.
The enemies you fight are actually Revenant who have given into their bloodlust completely – named Lost. And of course, these Lost will come in various shapes and sizes, as all beasties do. A “Buddy” will be tagging along with your throughout your journey, and you can use them in dangerous areas as a decoy to distract the Lost, while you land devastating attacks. With friends like that, who needs enemies?
Code Vein is apparently 35% complete and you can expect a full trailer in early May. What do you think of this new project from Bandai Namco? While there do seem to be some Souslike elements woven in to Code Vein, it looks to be a huge departure from Dark Souls, which I think is a good thing.
