Bungie has announced today in a blog post that they will be severing ties with Destiny’s long-time Publisher Activision, and that all publishing rights will go to Bungie. They will now be free to take the series in the direction of their choosing.
Destiny has sold over 50 million games, including expansions, to Guardians and fans alike worldwide with some expansions being more well-received than others. Throughout all of this, Bungie has shown capability to listen to what the fans want, and make changes where necessary in order to better the overall state of the game. Bungie expressed gratitude toward Activision, who has been their Publisher for the Destiny Series since the original Destiny‘s launch on September 9, 2014, and had this to say:
“With Activision, we created something special.” … “We have enjoyed a successful eight-year run and would like to thank Activision for their partnership on Destiny.” … “With our remarkable Destiny community, we are ready to publish on our own, while Activision will increase their focus on owned IP projects.”
Bungie has assured Guardians that the process is already underway in its beginning stages, in order for both parties involved to ensure “as seamless a transition as possible”. Bungie stated that they are committed to delivering the best content that they can possibly provide and that throughout Forsaken (Destiny 2‘s newest expansion) they have been paying close attention to what players want most, and that more of this is on the way. Going forward, they will be delivering on Destiny 2‘s existing Roadmap, and adding more Seasonal Events to the game.
Bungie ended things off by thanking the Destiny Community one last time for all their continued support over the years, and then stated,
“We know self-publishing won’t be easy; there’s still much for us to learn” … “we see unbounded opportunities and potential in Destiny. We know that new adventures await us all on new worlds filled with mystery, adventure, and hope. We hope you’ll join us there. See you starside.”
