Bandai Namco Games has unveiled a new trailer for the upcoming Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth, developed by Media.Vision. The trailer details the key story beats, with a fittingly-voiced narration by ‘Cyber Detective Kyoko Kuremi.’ Cyber Sleuth follows the adventures of an unnamed teenager who encounters a mysterious ‘Eater,’ digitizing his body. This chance encounter triggers a series of events that leads to our unnamed protagonist joining the fight against cyber crime. It seems rather evident that what seems like a simple situation quickly gets out of hand, and while the scale of the conflict is unknown, the presence of Omegamon suggests that matters will indeed get serious. The vivid, colorful art style and pulsing techno score lends a great deal to creating an almost ethereal atmosphere.

The distinct cyberpunk tone permeating through this trailer stands as a marked extension of the standard Digimon storyline. Although the general concept of ‘cyberspace’ and the ‘digital world’ of earlier franchise entries seem intrinsically related, this new take seems much more grounded in reality. Coupled with the initial focus on the human element and the misuse of technology in society, Cyber Sleuth seems to be taking a more hard-line route on the subject matter, and is shaping up to be a unique entry in the long-running franchise.

A return to the classic turn-based combat of old.

Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth is set to land on both PS4 and PS Vita on February 2. As previously reported, the Vita release will be exclusively digital, while the PS4 version will receive a physical release. A range of additional DLC will be available for those who pre-order. Cyber Sleuth is the first classic RPG-style Digimon title to be released in the West since Digimon World: Dawn and Dusk, which released for the Nintendo DS back in 2007. It’s been a long dry spell for Digimon fans, but with the Digimon Adventure Tri series of movies currently in production, and Cyber Sleuth set for imminent release, there has never been a better time to be a fan.
