Bethesda game director Todd Howard, in an interview with GI.biz, discussed the possibility of a Fallout movie. The recent lifetime achievement award recipient, when asked about the possibility of leveraging his studio’s IPs into other media, asserted “[Bethesda] had a couple of in-roads, particularly with Fallout” into the movie industry, but while “[he had] taken a number of meetings over the years and nothing quite clicked where [he] felt, ‘Oh, that would be as good as the game,'” he says anything’s possible. Howard went on to describe what niche exactly a Fallout movie would have to fill before being greenlit:
Fallout 4, if there had been a Fallout movie, you’d feel different about Fallout when we’d announced Fallout 4 and one of them wouldn’t be quite right and you wouldn’t want that to be the game, where the movie takes it in another direction… I would say we have a pretty high bar as far as what we would want it to be if it ever happened and nothing’s quite clicked. Even little things like, ‘What does the vault suit look like?’ – every little thing we obsess over so the game is the thing where it really exists.
With the dubious quality of movies based on games, gamers are likely grateful for Howard’s caution in expanding the Fallout universe, but still, with the right creative team behind it, you never know… Either way, an announcement of a Fallout or Elder Scrolls movie in the immediate future is still unlikely.
