At this year’s E3 convention, I had the pleasure to reacquaint myself with old friends at Focus Home Interactive, back on the show floor to show some of their new projects, which included a new action title called The Surge. To put this game broadly, The Surge is Bandai Namco’s Dark Souls meeting Gundam exosuits.
The Surge, developed by Deck13 (the developers behind Lords of the Fallen), brings forth a dystopian scenario for Earth in the worst sense, where the world-saving institution CREO attempted to solve the issue of global warming, only for something to go wrong and led the company to only fight and save itself.
Employees of this company must wear exosuits and the gameplay demo presented by the team demonstrated this chaotic world, where the protagonist’s own coworkers are hostile entities that must be put down. From what I observed, the combat is gripping, intense, and full of action. The game has crafting elements that can be used to upgrade the exosuits. The visuals are great, and has a distinctly science fiction feel to it.
The Surge is unique in its combat mechanics as the attacks revolve around the classification of weapons the protagonist uses; different weapons have vastly different play styles and attacks. Attacks can be focused at certain limbs; attacking the head can disable the foe completely, whereas attacking arms or legs can make it easier to stop enemies.
With the game releasing in 2017 to consoles and PC, and with what little demo footage I was shown, it’s definitely awakened a sense of curiosity. The impressions were definitely positive, and hopefully we get some more info in the coming days because it’s a title that I’ve added to my play list.
