God of War Alternatives You Should Play

God of War is without question the most critically acclaimed game of this year. Its superb story, satisfying gameplay and great graphics make it a true masterpiece. Yet, it is a PS4 exclusive, which means that not everyone has a chance to play it. For that reason we found four alternatives to God of War which you might have not played.

Ryse: Son of Rome

Originally an Xbox One exclusive, Ryse: Son of Rome was a game created to show off the capabilities of Microsoft’s next-gen system, and it did the job well. It’s a fun, linear third-person action game. As the title suggests it’s based on ancient Rome and tells the story of Marius Titus, who is on his quest to avenge his family. Though it may seem quite generic at first glance, the story is actually very good. It’s full of emotional moments, interesting plot twists and good characters.

Gameplay may not be super deep and it does relay little bit too much on QTE’s, yet it gets the job done. It’s certainly a game you would play for the story foremost. Overall it holds up quite well to this to this day. It may not be as pretty as Uncharted or God of War but it’s still a very good looking game. It serves as a good alternative to God of War if story is what you prioritise over gameplay. Ryse: Son of Rome is available on PC and Xbox One.

Lords of the Fallen

Lords of the Fallen is a game with quite a bad rep. Being a little bit too similar to Dark Souls ruined its image quite a bit, and to most it’s still just a clone. Gameplay-wise, there are a lot of similarities, as the button layout is almost identical to that of Dark Souls. There are some differences though, which here I won’t spoil. The biggest difference is the inclusion of actual story. You play as Harkyn, a convict criminal whose sins are tattooed on his face. His mission is to travel to source of darkness and defeat the Lords of the Fallen. It a simple story, backed up by good world building and interesting characters. It may not blow your mind, but it works quite well for a combat focused game that Lords of the Fallen is. I would say that is quite a good God of War alternative especially if combat is what you are primarily interested in Kratos’ latest adventure. Lords of the Fallen is available for PS4, Xbox One and PC.

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice is probably the closest you can get to God of War alternative. With heavy Nordic influences as well as amazing graphics, and third-person perspective, this game is almost indistinguishable from God of War. At the first glance anyway. Hellblade tells a story of Senua, a female warrior, in quest to save the soul of her late lover. It’s a deeply emotional story with very unique, metal health theme very unusual for a fantasy story. It works amazingly though and combined with interesting puzzles and satisfying combat, this is a true work of art. It is quite a linear and short game though, yet it’s quite significantly cheaper than God of War and it’s surely worth your money. It’s available on PS4, Xbox One and PC.

The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings

The Witcher 3 is regarded as one of the best games this generation, if not of all time. It’s a masterful combination of great world building, depth and storytelling compact into vast, visually stunning, open world. Witcher 3 sold over 25 million copies worldwide, and become the Game of the Year back in 2015.

Yet, no one remembers its predecessor, The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, which is a shame as it’s an amazing game. Being bit more linear, and having open hubs rather than a whole open world, it’s much more story heavy that its sequel, which God of War fans will surely appreciate. Combat is great, borrowing a lot from Dark Souls but it’s much faster paced, and being much more reliant on dodging rather than blocking.

The story is great, and side missions are as interesting as the story itself. It’s a game you will want to explore. Each rather small area is packed full of side missions, secrets, loot, as well as lore.

It’s also great looking game, that holds up very well to this day. It’s an almost perfect game that could easily rival God of War in terms of its quality and depth. That it is why it is the best God of War alternative that everybody should try. It is available for PC on Steam and GOG as well as on Xbox One through backwards compatibility.
