NetherRealm Studios revealed in their newest Kombat Kast that Jade is returning in Mortal Kombat 11. Jade has not been a playable character in a Mortal Kombat game since Mortal Kombat 9 (2011). Jade is fast, deadly, and the only character announced to date who has the ability to run (in some form) in Mortal Kombat 11. For this livestream Tyler Lansdown, Community Manager at NetherRealm Studios, was joined by fellow NetherRealm staff members Steve Brownback, Senior QA Analyst, Derek Kirtzic, Game Designer, and lastly Matt Burke, Assistant Producer. After a short introduction Steve announced that Jade was set to make her return, and it was at this point that they dropped the official Mortal Kombat 11 reveal trailer for Jade.
For those who are unfamiliar with Jade, she was childhood friends with Kitana. For many years she was Shao Khan’s personal assassin, and worked with Kitana and Mileena. After Kitana turned against Shao Khan, Jade was ordered to capture her, but ultimately chose to help her childhood friend instead, and has served as Kitana’s personal Bodyguard ever since. As a spy and an assassin, Jade is extremely skilled. She first appeared in Mortal Kombat II (1993) as an unplayable secret character which you could fight, and then debuted as a playable character in Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 (1995). Jade was killed in Mortal Kombat 9‘s Story Mode, and in Mortal Kombat X she was shown at the end of Kitana’s Arcade Mode storyline. Now in Mortal Kombat 11, she is set to return.
Perfecting the Character
After the trailer finished Derek talked about the way NetherRealm wanted Jade to feel in Mortal Kombat 11. Derek explained that the most important thing to him as a Game Designer is making sure each character’s personality is represented in their fighting style. NetherRealm has paid close attention to making Jade’s moveset agile and confident to represent her history as a fierce warrior. When discussing Jade’s fighting style in Mortal Kombat 11, Tyler had this to say,
“There’s almost a dancer’s flow, in a way, of how she moves gracefully” … “She wisps around, but is also super powerful, fast, and You don’t see it coming!”
Steve also chimed in and explained that one of the smaller details he enjoys about Jade’s fighting style is that her teleport ability is used to add visual flair into her move set. Whether it be at the end of her Shadow Kick, or during her throw, Jade’s teleport is mixed into different moves to add to her personality when fighting. When it comes to weapons, Jade makes use of Glaives for zoning attacks and a Staff which can be used to deflect your opponents’ projectiles if you time a certain move just right. Her Staff can also be used to land vicious combos up close, or to keep enemies at a manageable range, allowing you to dictate the pace of the fight and execute the plan of your choosing.
