Nintendo Spotlight showcased its world premier announcement for a brand new Metroid game for the 3DS. Metroid: Samus Returns will launch on September 15th. Unlike Metroid Prime: Federation Force this new game is a return to the classic formula. Samus Returns is a reimagination of the 1991 gameboy classic Metroid II: Return of Samus. The series protagonist, Samus Aran, is sent to investigate and eliminate the Metroid on planet SR-388.

A lot of familiar old features make a return in this game. Samus’s morph ball and rockets are available as upgrades. However, there are a slew of new mechanics to help bring the game into the modern age. Samus could aim her canon at a 45 degree angle in Metroid II. Samus Returns offers a new free aim mechanic, allowing plays to aim in whatever direction they need too. New aieon abilities offer Samus a variety of different skills. These are in addition to the regular technical suit upgrades seen in past incarnations. There is also new melee counter ability that, if timed right, deals a critical hit.

The E3 trailer is a combination of cinematic visuals and gameplay. It shows off the exquisite detail found in Samus Returns. Nintendo reserved a section of their Spotlight to feature live gameplay and speak to Yoshio Sakamoto about the development of the game. Two new amiibos were announced at the end of the Metroid section for the Nintendo Spotlight: a Metroid and a new Samus. Samus Returns does have amiibo support and is compatible with both the new amiibos and the previously released Zero Suit Samus and Super Smash Bros. Series Samus amiibos. Unfortunately there are no details as to what role the amiibos will play in the upcoming game.

A special edition and standard edition are both up for pre-order. The special edition includes the game, a soundtrack CD, and a reversible title sheet for the game case.
