With the exact nature of the upcoming Final Fantasy XV shrouded in mystery, a lot of fans are deeply curious about the inner workings of the hotly-anticipated title. The development team at Square Enix have opened their official forums up to reader questions, with the most popular questions receiving responses from the development team.

One of the more popular questions was directed at the difficulty setup, and how it relates to the combat system. Lead Game Designer Takizawa Masashi responded as follows:

“The equivalent to difficulty level settings in FFXV is a system where you can switch between different battle modes. By having this ability to switch modes, we want to make it so that both players who like action oriented, technical gameplay and also those who want to fight at a slower, more relaxed pace can all enjoy the combat in their own style. This switching system is a key part of the gameplay that we decided to introduce based on the feedback we received from the Episode Duscae demo. We will go into more detail about the system closer to the game’s launch so stay tuned for more information.”

While specific details remain unknown, it seems as though the battle system is a very well defined hybrid of turn-based and real time. Difficulty tuning in RPGs has proven to be a difficult task, so seeing the team at Square Enix try and find a unique solution is refreshing. Whether this approach works in their favor or not remains to be seen, but as we edge closer to the vague 2016 release date, hopefully we’ll see more information on the matter.
