Nintendo has been talking about their new account system named Nintendo Account for a while now, and though it launched in Japan back in December, sign-ups outside of Japan have just been opened.
It’s free and shouldn’t take more than 2 minutes if you have an existing Nintendo Network ID or social media account to speed up the registration process, so I’d certainly suggest it if you have any of Nintendo’s line of consoles. According to Gematsu, registration is limited to certain territories, namely Austria, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Germany, Spain, France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Russia, and the United States. Hopefully you’re somewhere in that list.
That’s not all, however. You can also pre-register for Nintendo’s upcoming mobile app, Miitomo, an interactive social networking application based on the Mii IP launching in March 2016. Pre-registering for the app will net you “My Nintendo Platinum Points”, which sound cool enough, though you can’t use them until “My Nintendo” actually launches sometimes later this year.
A bit of a bummer, maybe, but then again… the rewards program hasn’t even started and we’re already racking up points. That’s not too shabby.
