For fans of Vanillaware’s particular brand of action-platforming, a demo for the upcoming Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir has landed on the North American PlayStation Store. The demo includes all 5 playable characters and a single, lengthy stage to help familiarize yourself with the intricate gameplay mechanics.
After spending some time with the Japanese gameplay demo, Leifthrasir is shaping up to be a very solid action RPG. Each of the playable characters brings a unique, vastly different playstyle to the table, and each is very satisfying to use. The controls are universally tight and responsive, and the combat feels appropriately complex and challenging. There are a number of options at your disposal, keeping combat fresh and interesting. Though the demo stage is linear, the full game promises branching pathways, so expect some more varied level design later down the line. And of course, the game is visually stunning, with an incredible use of light and colour bringing the environment and characters to life. Expect to see some breathtaking scenery and beautifully designed characters on your journey through Norse mythology, all rendered in the stunning painterly art style distinctive of Vanillaware.
If you didn’t experience Odin Sphere upon its original release for the PS2 back in 2007, Leifthrasir is a great opportunity to catch up. The full game launches in North America on June 27, for the PS4, PS3 and Vita. European fans will have to wait until June 24 for the full release, with no demo release confirmed at this point.
