Plenty of users have signed on for Xbox Live gamer tags over the past several years. It’s a common problem with these systems, finding a name that suits you. MMO players know this struggle all too well; making the perfect character after hours of editing, only to find that the desired name is unavailable.

A similar situation has happened with Microsoft: years ago players created an ID but never used it. That is all about to change, with Microsoft releasing one million of those IDs to the public again. It all starts at 11 AM PDT today, May 18. The first name change is free, and any subsequent changes will require payment. Prepare for a steady, 24-hour rollout. Not all the names will be ready at once. The change will only be available to those who have been on Xbox Live for a year, and have a gold membership.
