The upcoming PS3 and PS4 RPG Persona 5 received a new trailer highlighting its story and characters, as as well as a small production delay. Originally slated for Winter 2014, it was quickly pushed back to a broad 2015 window, and is now on target for a Summer 2016 release. While this may be discouraging for some, this additional time in the development cycle allows for more polish, and hopefully in the end, a better game.

The footage on display captures that inherent charm that the Persona series is known for. Utilizing a graphic-novel feel and cel-shaded graphics, the game is aesthetically pleasing and the animation is fluid. In terms of story tone, this is shaping up to be a dark tale, as would be expected by Persona fans. There’s the usual talk of rumors and their ill intent, as well as the twisted manifestations of human desire. The player is tasked with investigating these manifestations, this time taking the form of elaborate ‘palaces,’ within which numerous treasures can be found. What potential consequences there may be for these actions remain unknown.

Persona 5 is shaping up to be an intriguing addition to the Persona franchise. Here’s to hoping Atlus acknowledges its’ roots and gives us some more of the core Shin Megami Tensei series sometime down the line.
