Planet of the Apes: Last Frontier Announced

Planet of the Apes: Last Frontier

Earlier last month we saw the third, and possibly the final, installment in the rebooted Planet of the Apes film franchise. Now it seems the franchise is jumping over to video games as Planet of the Apes: Last Frontier has been announced.

Planet of the Apes: Last Frontier is a standalone experience set a year or so after Dawn and takes place in the Rocky Mountains. The game contains two playable character with one being human and the other being an ape. A faction of breakaway Apes are forced into refuge in a human-owned valley. Winter is coming and the food supplies for the humans are very scarce. Like the films, the story aims for a morally ambiguous take on the conflict. Your choices decide who lives or dies in the game which will have multiple different endings depending on your choices. The approach is quite similar to adventure games like Until Dawn and Heavy Rain.

However, the game is set up differently than the previously mentioned titles. During IGN’s visit to the studio, Imaginati (who are developing the game) aims to combine the elements of both film and games. The ideal length the developers decided the game should be is around 2-3 hours (which is about a movie length run-time). Even though the main story will only be 2-3 hours, Imaginati are hoping to provide multiple replay options for the player. The game itself does not allow any direct control of the playable characters but there is a catch. The game allows you to focus more on the mentality of the characters and how the overall story plays out. Imaginati’s goal is for the player making a choice, whether a conversation or physical act, every 15-20 seconds. A six minute gameplay video was released to show off what to expect from the game which you can view down below.

First reported by IGN, debut developer Imaginati revealed the game which will take place in between the events of 2014’s Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and 2017’s War for the Planet of the Apes. The game is being published by Imaginarium which is the performance capture studio behind the Planet of the Apes films. The game is currently being developed on-site at the company’s historic Ealing Studio headquarters. The studio is being run by Andy Serkis who played Caesar in the rebooted Planet of the Apes franchise. No word yet though if Andy Serkis’s Caesar will make an appearance in the Last Frontier. The game does not have a official release date yet. Lost Frontier is slated to release for PS4, Xbox One and PC this fall.

As a fan of the series, I am very excited to see how Planet of the Apes: Last Frontier turns out. However, if the game is only 2-3 hours then I hope that the game is not charged at a full AAA video game price. Time will only tell and it seems we won’t have to wait much longer for the game.
