Releasing its findings for American console sales, the NPD group has announced the PlayStation 4 was the top-selling console in December. This news hardly comes as a surprise with the PlayStation reportedly selling double the units of the Xbox One since its launch in 2013.
Even with Sony’s success, the Xbox One has managed to top sales in previous months. Most recently, in October, the Xbox One, according to the NPD group, topped the sales charts even with the PlayStation 4’s price cut.
In a statement to IGN, Sony “thank[ed] fans and partners for making PlayStation 4 the top-selling console in December and in 2015” and added “more than 5.7 million PS4s and 35 million PS4 games were sold through to consumers worldwide” during the season.
The sales record of the PlayStation 4 rivals even the PlayStation 2. By the end of September 2015, the PlayStation 4, according to a financial report by Sony, continued to outpace sales of the Playstation 2 – selling 29.3 million units when, in the same timeframe, the PlayStation 2 had managed only 24.99 million units.
