Video game movies are a beleaguered subgenre. After delay upon delay, we can sometimes forget that these movies are even in development at all. So it is with some (hesitant) excitement that in an interview with IGN, J.J. Abrams has confirmed that both a Portal movie and a Half Life movie are “very much still in development.” These movies were announced back in 2013, and since then, we haven’t really heard much in the way of details.
In an amongst some understandable question-dodging, and vague metaphors about trees, there was one solid statement: “I’m hoping there will be a Portal announcement fairly soon.” He also mentioned that there is a “meeting coming up next week” concerning the Portal movie. He gave fans some hope by adding that discussions surrounding the movies were “very active”. While not a great deal to go on, the talks relating to these video game movies are still on-going. We can safely say that the Portal movie hasn’t simply vanished from memory.
There have been a spattering of relatively satisfying video game movies as of late, such as Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV (review here) and Warcraft. Even the Assassin’s Creed movie is shaping up to look rather good. The success of these movies is in part to do with how they incorporate the mythos of the game world. We can only hope that this trend continues towards the positive. Dare I say Half Life movie confirmed?
