It was incredibly likely that Red Dead Redemption 2 was going to be a hit from the get-go, considering the amount of love for the existing franchise and the hype that was built up around the sequel’s release. So, it’s no surprise that Rockstar has confirmed the game has surpassed even their own high expectations with the results of its opening weekend.
The game developer has revealed that Red Dead Redemption 2 made over a staggering $725 million during its opening weekend, and it’s still pulling in big figures. This incredible success gives the game the title of having one of the biggest launches of all time across all media platforms. That means that it has outranked films such as Avengers: Infinity War and continues to surpass expectations.
The only game that’s outranking Red Dead Redemption 2 at the moment takes the form of its counterpart Grand Theft Auto 5, which made over $1 billion in its first three days. However, the latter was released on a Thursday, which technically means that it didn’t have a bigger ‘opening weekend’. Or at least that’s the way that Rockstar sees it.
Though it was always expected that Red Dead Redemption 2 would get a good reception and anticipated to have somewhat of a successful release, Take-Two Interactive never quite expected it to surpass Grand Theft Auto 5. In an earlier interview, Take-Two’s CEO Strauss Zelnick stated:
Look, Grand Theft Auto is the most profitable entertainment property of all time. That’s a pretty big statement. I don’t think the challenge for any one of our releases is if it’s as successful as another release.
That gives fans the insight into the fact that, despite the immense success of the sequel, it never reached the status of being a contender to beat out Grand Theft Auto 5. However, fans might see it differently depending on what they consider as ‘opening weekend’. If the additional day of GTA5 sales is overlooked, then the two games could very well be neck-to-neck.
Red Dead Redemption 2 was released on October 26, 2018, and is expected to pull in big sales figures for some time.
