Square Enix has officially announced the release date for their mobile game Mobius Final Fantasy. The game has been playable in Japan since June 2015, and will be released internationally August 3rd. Mobius Final Fantasy is a free-to-play episodic game set to emulate the caliber of gameplay and storytelling that is more common on console games. In Mobius Final Fantasy, you will take control of Wol, and man without memory who regains consciousness in a land named Parimitia. You will fight darkness and chaos with battle, class, and job systems inspired by previous Final Fantasy games. Square Enix is hosting per-registration for players who are interested in trying the game out. You can check out the official trailer below.
Mobius Final Fantasy‘s story is told over 5 episodes, and was played by over 1 million fans in the early weeks after it’s release (the link provided is for a Japanese site, and will need to be translated). In the months following, Mobius boasted 2 million active users. While the graphics and battle systems were considered to be top-notch, many notable sources, including Kotaku, make note that it is “rather light on the story elements”.
“If you are looking for a classic, deep, plot-heavy JRPG, this game is not that […] But if you want a casual, engaging, very pretty, combat game, then give Mobius Final Fantasy a try.” -Toshi Nakamura, Kotaku
Many Final Fantasy fans world wide readily await this title. Whether it lives up to the hype or not remains to be seen, however with the success Mobius Final Fantasy has had in Japan we can expect something worth our time at the very least.
