Rumor: Bandai Namco Working on NX Titles, Smash Bros. at Launch

We don’t normally report on rumors, but this one may have some credibility, and if nothing else, makes an interesting discussion topic with its possibility.

Analyst and consultant Dr. Serkan Toto of Japan tweeted earlier today that Bandai Namco is working on multiple titles for Nintendo’s new console, codenamed “NX”. He also said that Smash Bros. will be a launch title, though both the specific date and whether this Smash title is new or not are still up in the air.

Dr. Toto has been known to be a reliable source in the past which is why we and many others have chosen to report on this despite its status as a rumor. Furthermore, it’s not a particularly outrageous rumor in terms of believability: Bandai Namco publishes a lot of games for Nintendo’s consoles and also worked with them on the development of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS.

Considering “Smash 4” has only been on the market for a little over a year and has been supported by a steady stream of DLC, some people may feel a new entry would be both unnecessary and unlikely, but a port of the game may help spur the NX to a strong start in sales.

It’s too early to say what kind of improvements could come to the game given how little has been confirmed about the NX’s features and technical specs, but there is certainly room for improvement. Small adjustments to criticized elements such as the UI and online modes, the inclusion of a story mode, and packaging all the DLC from the start may make an enhanced edition of the game enticing for fans of the series like me who know Smash can reach even higher heights as a game.

Do you think this rumor could turn out to be true? If so, what might you want to see from a hypothetical “enhanced edition” of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, or even Smash 5? Let us know in the comments!
