Microsoft have thanked the Xbox community for their support during the first week of the Sea of Thieves launch in a post over on their website. They have also revealed that a million players were sailing the seas on launch day, which has now risen to over two million players, making Sea of Thieves their fastest-selling first-party new IP of this generation. Pretty impressive considering the mixed response the game itself has been receiving.
There has also been a massive interest on streaming sites such as Twitch, and this is what Microsoft has to say regarding that:
“In addition to its social gameplay that brings people together to create memories and make new friends, one of the things that makes Sea of Thieves so special is how much fun it is to stream and watch others. More than 100,000 players have streamed Sea of Thieves since launch, resulting in more than 10 million hours watched in the last week. Thank you to all the content creators and community who have streamed Sea of Thieves and entertained viewers with their creativity and sense of fun as it jumped into the number one slot on Twitch and Mixer several times this past week.”
Microsoft probably has Game Pass to thank for those numbers, as Sea of Thieves was available from launch on the subscription-based game download platform, and many players would have taken advantage of the two week free trial. So it will be interesting to see how the player count fares after those two weeks are up.
