Shenmue 3, one of the most highly funded Kickstarter projects of all time, is continuing the proud tradition of crowdfunded games never coming out on schedule. In a video posted by Yu Suzuki, the game’s designer, he told us that Shenmue 3 would be delayed until the second half of 2018. He gave some reasons for the delay, stating that the game has become bigger they could have ever imagined.
“We unfortunately must delay its release,” said Suzuki in the video, “By utilizing new technologies we have been able to discover new possibilities and expressions. In many ways the game has become bigger and more beautiful than I initially expected. We do, however, need more time to deliver the game to you.”
Shenmue 3 raised over $6 million in pledges over 2 years. It seems that with such a large amount of money to play with, the developers have gotten themselves in over their heads. It doesn’t come as much of a surprise then that this delay has been announced. What do you think? Is it bad that crowdfunded games tend not to be released on time? Or it justified when it allows the developers to make their game better? Let us know in the comments below.
