During the Steam Summer Sale this year users will find Counter Strike Global Offensive at a great deal. However Steam has made an important decision this time, users will not be able to purchase CSGO as a gift during the sale. To further the abnormalities, Valve’s Ido Magal cleared the air on reddit by explaining the decision.
CS:GO will not be giftable during the sale. Our goal with sales is to grow the community and historically, during sales, the new users that stick around are mainly the ones that purchase copies for themselves. – Ido Magal
Now that is not much of an explanation. Breaking Ido’s words down, Valve aims to improve the community by making it harder for cheaters to reemerge after being banned. One way these cheaters are able to come back to CSGO is buying a new copy on sites like G2A. Users of these sites buy copies of various games while they are on sale, then resell these games for just more than they paid, sometimes well after the Steam sale is over.
This known tactic won’t work for CSGO during the Steam Summer Sale this year. Valve has started to take action against the hordes of cheaters and hackers in the CSGO community and many players hope they continue these efforts. This unfortunately does effect the legit players as well. Friends will have to find alternate ways to buy CSGO for each other during this sale.
Is the decision of limiting the sales of this title during one of Steam’s biggest sales of the year a good idea? Is inconveniencing players in this way worth the number of cheaters prevented? Time will tell how effective this will be and if Valve decides to continue this policy for future sales. What do you think will be affected more, cheaters or the resale sites?
