Witchfire Announced, Apparently a Walking Simulator Mixed with an FPS

Witchfire was announced at The Game Awards 2017, which is a new game from The Astronauts, who developed The Vanishing of Ethan Carter. The first half of the brief trailer appears to be a first person exploration game (or walking simulator), but it also has first person shooter elements. Shooting does look to be a core mechanic, though it is unclear how much narrative will be involved.

The trailer sees the protagonist walking through the forest only to uncover a portal into some kind of ruins. Text on the screen then reveals that the game is also “from the creators of Painkiller and Bulletstorm” before jumping into intense shooter combat against mystical monsters that are reminiscent of something we might see in Dark Souls. This could be the next step forward in the ‘walking simulator’ genre, offering brutal shooter elements in combination with exploration. The artwork and environments are beautiful — this is certainly a game to keep an eye on.
